Back in town

Back from a great trip to Louisville. Actually a pound less than when I left, which is unusual, and unexpected from the amount of fantastic food consumed. Finished up the weekend with another amazing performance by The Bad Plus.
tech support hightlight of the day
Someone wrote a daily cronjob to rsync a 150 GB home directory to 7 Gb root directory. This didn’t work out as well as they hoped.
Population 485 – Michael Perry
Started reading this last night, and it immediately took my back to my hometown. Michael has returned to his hometown and becomes a volunteer fireman. It’s a book that I wish I had an afternoon to lose myself in.
Edit: I really like this line.
“Working-class prejudice never quite shakes the idea of art as frivolity, and frivolity has pink-palms.”
Coming from a small town, this was always something rolling around in my head while I was studying music. How useless it would seem at times. I still have similar feelings about IT, questioning if I should be doing something that may have a more positive impact.
being beat by nfs
Been fighting a long series of problems with a Rocks cluster. It’s come down to a serial device that locked up every single node, and now a NFS issue that appears to be not allowing nodes to boot.
It’s been awhile since I’ve dealt with NFS, but it seems odd that commenting out an entry in /etc/exports will allow the nodes to boot perfectly fine. If the entry is left uncommented, the node will completely lock up on startup.
There’s now a gigantic list of work to do, and no end in sight. Every time I clean out my inbox, and get items added to my todo list, there’s another half-dozen items needing attention. I’m learning a bit, but it’s all surface type of information. There’s no time to dig into anything. I started making some progress on my network monitor app, but that had to be put aside. I need to make the time to get back to that soon.
3:30 am, Tex Avery time
The brain won’t let me sleep, so I’m watching some Tex Avery uploads on youtube. As a kid, these were usually tossed on between Tom and Jerry episodes, and were always my favorites. Episodes like “Farm of Tomorrow” and “House of Tomorrow” had a big influence on the type of “tomorrow-land / googie” design I like. Fantastic design, great music, and that “perfectly articulated suburban white-guy” voice-over.
And with relief
Finally back to the gym. Had the ok from the physical therapist that I could go back to the gym after nearly a month off. It was pretty depressing to see how weak I am, and what I long way I have to go just to get back to where I was (at the start of August, I had a 400lb deadlift). I am glad that the shoulder is healing well, and I have a lot more range of motion (actually being able to raise my arm above my head for the first time in about 8 months). Only two more scheduled trips to physical therapy and then hopefully I won’t have to deal with doctors for awhile.
I ended up losing 20 lbs over the summer, most likely a chunk of that being muscle. Now I have to deal with purchasing some new clothes, as my current wardrobe seems to be drowning me. Looking silly is about the only thing that will finally get me to go clothes shopping.
